Halloween is a fun-filled fall holiday that’s loved by kids and adults alike! It’s also the one holiday that’s all about getting lots and lots of candy while trick-or-treating as well as all types of sweet treats and goodies at parties and get-togethers. If you were to ask anyone who has worn braces about breaking a bracket or wire, they’d be quick to tell you that Halloween night is not a good time to have an emergency situation with your braces. Kids and teens wearing braces can have a great time on Halloween and enjoy some sweet treats without any problem by following these tips.
Steer Clear of These Types of Candies That Can Damage Your Braces
When it comes to candy, there are several types you should not eat because they can break your brackets and wires including:
- Caramel
- Taffy
- Gummy candy
- Candy containing nuts
- Hard candy
- Jelly beans
- Sticky & gooey candy bars
- Licorice
You also need to avoid eating caramel and candied apples, pretzels, hard-crusted pizza and bagels as all these foods can easily damage your appliances.
Candy & Sweets You Can Enjoy While Wearing Braces
Even though it may seem like you cannot enjoy any sweet treats on Halloween, there are actually several types of candy and other goodies you can enjoy like:
- Pure chocolate that melts in your mouth
- Peanut butter cups
- Mint patties
- Cake and cupcakes
- Soft candy bars without nuts or caramel
- Ice cream
- Yogurt
- Popsicles
You can also enjoy healthy sweet treats like melon, berries, soft fruits and smoothies.
A Friendly Bit of Advice to Parents
We would like to remind all the parents of our young patients to make sure your kids brush, floss and rinse their mouths after eating lots of candy this Halloween. The last thing you want to happen is to find out your child has a common dental problem like tooth decay. If a cavity were to develop while your child is wearing braces, it could prolong the time he or she spends wearing braces which is something nobody wants!
